Recent Catches At Breerivier

Long time no post, but here is a special catch for me, a long finned eel, at 2 in the afternoon. I've never seen one before, and from what I've read up, quite a lucky catch for the middle of the day, they are a nocturnal species, and tend to camp out in deep holes until mature to breed at which point they head back to the sea to reproduce. The breede river is exceptionally deep in parts and I must have got the bait in the exact right location to catch it. It gave a really good fight I was using light tackle I had to be careful to reel it on a barbless hook, it ended up breaking my baitrunner reel so I was lucky to get it onto the bank. Its certainly one of the most exciting species I've caught so far, and was pretty aggressive trying hard to bite me. 10/10 wouldn't recommend handling one, like most eel species they are very slimy, and horrible to handle. I don't expect to ever catch another, but it is nice knowing they are still around, it's the only indigenous fish I've caught in the breede, which is sad. It was roughly 1m long and I'd estimate it weighed about 1kg or so
