This post includes 2 nights of camping at Flaming Gorge. I went out for a short session the first evening after setting up camp. I got a couple bites, but didn’t catch any as I was doing some preliminary exploration and scouting for the next day. The next day was a challenging but great day on the water. This is such a massive reservoir; I only touched one tiny corner of it. Combine its area with a depth of 430 feet, and you’ve got a lot of water. It would be really tough to fish it with no sonar. I saw quite a few casual anglers doing that, and didn’t see any catching. The lake trout in particular were deep, and suspended at various depths, not on the bottom. I figured some stuff out, and landed a couple of nice lakers. Well, nice by my standards. At 22 and 24 inches, these are mere pups which are encouraged to be harvested to make more room for trophy-size (30+ pound) fish. I had a lot of bites and lost fish; much to learn and improve! I also caught a couple rainbow trout, the last one being a solid fish around 22 inches. I will say pound-for-pound, rainbows may be the hardest fighting of the freshwater trout species. The final morning I only had a couple hours. With the prior day’s learning in mind, I quickly located some lake trout and got several bites. But no solid hookups, which was frustrating. More learning. Next time I’ll be sure to use a stinger/trailer hook, and set the hook even harder. From tooth marks on my tube jig, I surmise that they were holding it with their teeth, and I needed to set harder to get it out of their teeth and set in their lip. This body of water is incredible and I truly hope to go back. The baitfish were plentiful on the sonar, revealing a vibrant fishery which also includes Kokanee, smallmouth, and non-native burbot (which they’re trying to cull). With over 350 miles of shoreline, one could spend years exploring it.

Me and my grandpa and my new neighbors in Manila caught this giant Mack in the gorge. We had a fun time and it was a lot of fun and there was no ice what so ever and it’s so beautiful. Tight lines guys.
