This one gave me a workout. From the hook set, it was obvious that this one had some girth. Fought like a champ too.

First carp of the year. Caught it on a cornmeal/corn/strawberry jello dough ball. It's a common recipe, but I prefer boiling the jello first using the liquid found in a can of sweet corn. I turn the heat off upon boil, and then add the cornmeal and corn. Then refrigerate until firm. The bait will still dissolve around water, but will keep the hook covered for longer periods of time. Since both catfish and carp hone onto amino acids, I add some more with gluten free soy sauce (straight aminos) and bee pollen pellets (more aminos). I had the doughball for about 2 weeks, so I was looking to get rid of it. I chummed the leftover bits I had, and this put about a dozen fish into a feeding frenzy right off the shore. Gear wise, I used a Shakespeare GX2 spinning combo purchased at Walmart for $17. The setup responds wonderfully to even small hits. I'm using 30 lb braided onto a swivel with an Eagle Claw steel leader ending at an Eagle Claw 4/0 circle hook. I feared that the hook would be too large for carp, but the combo worked as it should. This hook design is used to prevent gut hooking, and has been working wonderfully on both carp and channel cats. It's hooking them right at the corner of their mouths, and they can't shake it out. I made the switch after a catfish almost took out his eye on the old size 6 J-hooks I've used forever. If you're a catch and release angler, and are concerned about the health of the fish, I suggest giving circle hooks a go.

First small mouth of the year on the first time I went out this year. Looks like it was a female full of eggs.
