I have tried to catch a Surf Perch for many hours yesterday at the Monterey. I have used high/low rig with 3" and 2" paddle tail and switch to Gulp Sandworm once awhile. All Surf Perch in Monterey must go somewhere this time of year. The only bite I am getting was Jack Smelt. I think Jack Smelt is one of the easiest fish to catch because most people release it back. I have tried deep-fry the Jack Smelt but it still had a unique Jack Smelt smell. Yesterday, I tried BBQ the Jack Smelt by putting a little bit of wood charcoal from Costco in the middle of the Weber grille, put fish at the edge grille, and slow cook it. Let wood smoke absorb into Jack Smelt for 30 minutes. It came out without that unique Jack Smelt smell and not as mushy as Surf Perch.
