PB ALERT! Finally I got to open an account at the notorious Rietvlei dam! Good Morning FA family! Life and particularly fishing is a funny old game.. I would have given my right big toe to be able to land a new PB carp at this venue but I was blessed with a first for me in my angling "career ". I was invited by my good friend Andrew Campbell to join his session at Rietvlei. Due to my work schedule I could only join him on the Saturday afternoon. With Andrew's help I quickly set up my tent, tied a new braid leader (crabs!) and put some banana garlic floaties with maize pips combo out. Following my other FA friend Sean Dalhouzie advice on not be shy of using alot of sweet bol dips, I cast out about 80 m. Not long after I noticed my bait indicator laying in the water, and I realized it was a back bite, tighten the line up and I was on with something small but it wasn't fighting at all. Andrew netted this little bugger and we had a discussion about the identity of this fish. Photos was taken quickly and it was safely released. After an uneventful evening and a very windy next morning we called it quits and headed home. Being the person I am I started researching my "Complete Guide to the Freshwater Fishes of Southern Africa" by Paul Skelton because I was not 100% sure that this was a juvenile Smallmouth Yellowfish. Research lead me to identifying it as a Bushveld Smallscale Yellowfish (Labeobarbus Polylepis) and confirmed it on the internet through Researchgate! A definite first for me and in other words a new personal PB!
